Dealer South: love all

South must decide which suit to attack first. If the club finesse works (50%), South will have five clubs, two spades and two diamonds. He will also have time to get two hearts – although he doesn’t need them for game. If the club finesse fails, South has only four clubs and will need a heart trick. So South MUST go after hearts first, because the ♥A is a dangerous entry to a set up spade suit. If West takes the first heart, he has no further entry to his spades. South can later safely take the club finesse. When West refuses the first heart, now South should switch to clubs. The game is then quite safe. If South went after the clubs first, East would take the ♣K and return a spade. West would still have the ♥A – try explaining that to Norman Sulcas at half-time.
