Nasty C: the ‘coolest kid in Africa’?

- HELEN HERIMBI

THE past few months have been incredible for Nasty C. There’s no denying that. In addition to scooping a slew of awards, topping charts and being involved in one of the most nonsensical beefs of recent times with Dr Malinga, this Durbanite has been the talk of the town for a while.

It all started when he released the ultracatchy single, Juice Back. But he really caught the people’s ear and heart when the Mabala Noise rapper leaked his debut album, Bad Hair, and damn near broke the internet with the record-breaking number of streams and downloads of that album.

Leaking things that people want seems to be following the kid, though. It has been reported that the list of winners of the 2017 BET Awards was leaked to the internet last week. What does this have to do with the rapper who was born Nsikayesizwe David Junior Ngcobo?

You’ll remember that we told you that he, along with AKA and Babes Wodumo, is repping South Africa in the Best International Act: Africa category of the BET Awards. The other nominees are Tekno, Wizkid, Mr Eazi, Stonebwoy and Davido, who worked with Nasty C on Coolest Kid in Africa. So word is, on the leaked list, Nasty C was crowned the winner in that category.

The actual awards ceremonies only take place in Los Angeles on Saturday and Sunday and will see the likes of Trevor Noah, Jamie Foxx and Cardi B presenting awards. But back to the list. Who else was on it? I’ll be honest, I haven’t seen it and no one else seems to know who the other supposed winners are, so I’ll have to take this information with a pinch of salt. Not because Nasty C doesn’t deserve the win – all of the acts nominated in that category have made undeniable moves in the past year, so the award is anyone’s for the taking.

But it just seems strange that winners of such a huge property of a company like Viacom would be leaked and all that people would point out is Nasty C. Why were the international categories the only ones affected? So we still don’t know if Beyoncé – who is the most nominated with seven nods – scooped even one award. Come on, son.

Anyway, BET has sent out an official statement acknowledging that a few categories were leaked. Here is what the channel says: “An unforeseen technical issue on BET.com’s BET Awards show page resulted in several categories revealing randomly selected nominees as winners.”

“We deeply apologise to the artists who were impacted by this error, and we look forward to celebrating all of this year’s incredible international nominees and winners during the BET Experience and BET Awards next week.

“The winners of the Best International: Africa, Best International: Europe, and International Viewer’s Choice categories will be revealed at the BET International Awards ceremony on Saturday, June 24.”

The main awards ceremony will happen the next day. We’ll be watching.

The BET Awards will air on BET (DStv Channel 129) on June 27 at 8pm.
