Aunt gets 12 years in jail for killing nephew

THE Sutherland Regional Court sentenced a woman to 12 years in prison for the murder of her nephew, police said.

Northern Cape police spokespers­on Lieutenant- Colonel Dimakatso Mooi said Carlin Sara Smith, 31, was sentenced yesterday, two years after her arrest.

“Smith was arrested on August 15, 2015, after she stabbed her nephew during an argument. The victim was stabbed several times in the neck and later succumbed to his wounds at a hospital in Kimberley,” Mooi said.

Two years of Smith’s sentence were suspended for five years.

In a separate case, Mervin Nelson, 31, was convicted of attempted murder for stabbing a man. Nelson was sentenced to five years in jail.

The cluster commander of Namakwa, Brigadier Francis Hender, commended the investigat­ing officer on both cases, Sergeant Elton Klein, for ensuring the criminals “faced the might of the law”.

“You do the crime, you do the time,” Hender added. – ANA THERE is relief for Knysna Oyster Festival-goers following the news that the event will go ahead next month after the recent fires that ravaged the coastal town.

The annual festival, which is set to start on July 8 and end on July 16, has huge appeal for sports lovers, families, foodies, and those in search of 10 days of fun during winter,.

The event attracts thousands of visitors to Knysna as well as stimulate the town’s economy. Up to 2 392 job opportunit­ies were created last year and R3 million raised for local charities.

Leon Brown, organiser of the Knysna Forest Marathon, said that the race would go ahead: “We are dedicating the event to all the people who lost everything in the fires and will be focusing on our blanket drive.

“We urge people to add to the 2 000 blankets which Momentum donates every year, and to also donate clothing which will be collected at registrati­on and the race start in the Glebe, so that it can be distribute­d to where it is most needed.”

There will be activities such as the BIG5 Challenge and the Knysna Cycle Tour road race on July 9.

The Knysna Forest marathon and half marathon will take place on July 15.

Marketing agencySam Wright expects the event to unite the community and provide a great opportunit­y to boost the town’s economy.

“It is a beautiful and popular event to attend as people get the rare opportunit­y to enjoy all the fun activities,” the agency said.

Knysna Festival board chairperso­n Elmay Bouwer said it was heartening to how South Africans had assisted, and continue to help, those affected by the fires in Knysna.

“The festival will be a great opportunit­y for people who want to help our residents to recover from this disaster, and we are looking forward to welcoming a record number of people to our beautiful town,” Bouwer said. – Staff Reporter
