Second wind: cleanup drive goes global

-

AFTER a successful Clean Your Hood campaign in Langa, the neighbourhood is now part of a worldwide effort aimed at promoting a cleaner Earth.

The clean-up effort in Langa went so well that they are looking at continuing with the project in August.

Their efforts formed part of a global effort started by the WeLoveU foundation. This group of enthusiasts conducts environmental campaigns across the globe under the Clean WORLD slogan.

The movement is divided into five parts – Clean Water, Clean Oxygen, Clean Region, Clean Life and Clean Descendants.

The campaign raises awareness about the environment and how to ensure clean water and oxygen for future generations. To date, the foundation has established 26 water pumps in waterstressed countries including Ghana, Kenya and Cambodia.

Previously a similar campaign was started in Little Mowbray. For the Little Mowbray clean-up campaign, the foundation’s Cape Town volunteers teamed up with the city’s solid waste management department to focus on the Liesbeek Parkway, Durban Road, the Mowbray Maternity Hospital and the Mowbray taxi rank.

“The clean-up campaign that we hosted in Langa was part of the May 22 Clean World Day, which aims to fight climate change. We normally carry out five campaigns throughout the year,” said one of the organisers, Kusile Kewana.

“We have received a lot of appreciation and recognition from the community. Our goal was to create awareness, and that is what has happened.”

The foundation will host another event in August. – Staff Reporter
