One moment in time with Belinda Davids…
THE GREATEST LOVE OF ALL: THE WHITNEY HOUSTON SHOW
CAST: Belinda Davids VENUE: Artscape Theatre UNTIL: July 16 RATING: ★★★★✩ SOUTH African-born Belinda Davids brings Whitney Houston to life in the Whitney Houston tribute show.
Houston was one of the best vocalists of our time and thanks to Showtime Australia and the spectacular vocals of Davids, for a moment in time you experience the greatness that was Houston.
Tribute shows can either be a roaring success or it can be a snooze fest with a mediocre band and below average vocal ability.
The Greatest Love Of All is luckily in the former and will blow you away.
This is mostly due to the amazing vocal ability of Davids.
She not only resembles Houston physically but her vocal styling and riffs are so accurate that there are times when it feels like you’re listening to the iconic songstress herself.
Houston’s songs are very difficult to sing because they are arranged very high and a bunch of her songs have several key changes. Davids is able to sing with ease and it’s as if she was born to do this.
The real shining moment is during I Have Nothing.
This is probably one of Houston’s most difficult songs and Davids not only hit it out of the park, she hit it straight out of the stadium.
I was gagging the whole way through and when that final chorus hit, the whole crowd gave her a standing ovation.
The only negatives are that the wardrobe in the first half was questionable and the back-up dancers at times are distracting by doing very remedial choreography. Luckily, Davids has a voice that makes you forget about all that and has the type of vocal ability that puts Mariah Carey to shame. She really is a star.
The Greatest Love Of All is a wonderful tribute to the icon that left us too soon. This show is not to be missed and is something that every Houston fan should experience. ● Tickets are available at Computicket.
