Alert after tourist attacked while walking in Muizenberg

- Yolisa Tswanya

AN ATTACK on a German tourist in Muizenberg, by a hammer-wielding assailant and an accomplice, has left the community on alert. The attack left the tourist with a cracked skull and broken leg.

A friend of the victim, Bronwyn Hahn, shared some details of the attack on social media and said the victim was “struck on the head with a hammer, fracturing her skull, jumped on, breaking her leg and kicked in the face.”

Hahn added that the attackers were a male and female who walked past her and attacked her from behind. The attackers made off with her belongings.

“Our friend is, incredibly, in a stable condition and undergoing surgery. Naturally, this again raises the issue of security/police presence and safety.”

The attack is one of at least three this year. After the attack last week, spray-painting warning residents of the attacks appeared where the incident happened.

One resident shared a picture of the words “don’t walk alone, mugging hotspot” spray-painted on the walkway.

Muizenberg CPF spokesperson Frank Bokhorst said he did not have much information on the latest incident. “It’s an ongoing problem and is getting worse.”

Bokhorst said last year was particularly bad. They believed the attac kers hide near the railway line. “There was an arrest and this was a success, but it got bad again.”

Anyone with any information can contact Detective Sergeant Patrick Leaner, on 021 787 9000/14/15 or Crime Stop on 0860 010 111.
