Pay it forward: feed the needy on Mandela Day

- Lonwabo Marele

NELSON Mandela Day is coming up and FoodForward SA is inviting corporations to volunteer 67 minutes in providing meals to one million underprivileged people in the Western Cape.

FoodForward SA’s Mandela Day Food Drive will run across South Africa from Friday, and thousands of volunteers are needed to assist the NPO in collecting and packing meals that will be delivered on Tuesday.

The sites for the packing events are Century City Conference Centre in Cape Town, Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg, Olive Convention Centre in Durban and FoodForward SA’s warehouse in Port Elizabeth.

The managing director at FoodForward SA, Andy du Plessis, said, “People can take action, inspire change and help us build a South Africa without hunger by either volunteering at the Pn P in-store campaign from Friday to Sunday, or adding items to their cart when shopping over those days to give to those less fortunate.

“All donated food will make its way to central packing locations in Cape Town, Joburg, Durban, and Port Elizabeth, where, on July 18, corporates will be invited to spend their 67 minutes to sort and pack the goods”.

The NPO has 600 beneficiary organisations involved in early childhood development, skills development, women’s empowerment and homes for the aged, and with the Mandela Day Food Drive they will be dedicated to feeding the homeless and orphanages across South Africa.
