Pupil outreach improves marks

- Sibahle Skomolo

FOR the past seven years, pupils from Rondebosch Boys High (and now other schools) have reached out to the pupils from Isolomzi Secondary School in the Eastern Cape, to tutor them in various subjects including maths, physics, life orientation, music and sport.

The partnership has resulted in Isolomzi’s matric pass rate rising from 46% to almost 100%. Last year, the top pupils in the district attended Isolomzi and achieved seven distinctions.

This month, more than 40 local pupils have again made their way to the Eastern Cape to assist with the development of the pupils in this area.

This partnership shows that through collaboration, education is a tool that should not be overlooked.

Rowan Harmuth, a teacher from Rondebosch Boys High, said this journey started in 2012 when he and a friend met a little boy who told them about how he travelled 13km to school.

The boy introduced them to the headmaster of Isolomzi High School, Sizo Batshingi, who told them about the challenges of a lack books, unqualified and not enough teachers or staff and overcrowded classes, and they decided to help.

“We started in July 2012 with a trip of eight boys and two cars having books etc. This year, the trip has more than 43 pupils which includes different schools, universities and families from Cape Town,” said Harmuth.

“The pass rate at the school at the time was 38%, and now we have reached a 97% pass rate. What inspires us is was how enthusiastic the headmaster is about his people, how strongly he believes in making a difference to his people. He instilled a belief in them that having a great matric mark would take them out of poverty.

“We have been blessed with great sponsors and donations from Meko Ford in Claremont with vehicles; Caltex in the Eastern Cape with fuel; and Checkers and Pick n Pay with gift vouchers.

“SAB added R50 000 to our wish list. We also have entertainment for the learners. After all, it’s their holiday.”

Shoprite has also partnered with the pupils from the Transkei Isolomzi Outreach to assist with supplying food, blankets, beanies and scarves, as well as much-needed kitchen equipment and bedding for the Isolomzi Secondary School.
