A new chapter
GRADE 3A Greenlands Primary pupils after receiving a donation of books. The Cape Argus visited the school in Bishop Lavis yesterday to deliver more than 200 books to the school’s library.
GREENLANDS Primary School in Bishop Lavis has a new collection of books thanks to the Cape Argus and the Men’s Foundation.
Not only will the school and its children benefit from the donation, so will the surrounding community – including the informal settlements of Malawi and Freedom Park.
The donation formed part of the ongoing Nelson Mandela Day initiatives and the celebration of the Cape Argus turning 160.
Greenlands Primary is in one of the poorest communities in Cape Town. For children from disadvantaged backgrounds, books are often not a priority when it comes to spending. As Madiba famously said: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
Deputy principal Peter Conradie said the school had appealed to businesses to donate to the school’s library. “We are humbled and grateful for the donation,” he said.
Cape Argus editor Aziz Hartley thanked Men’s Foundation for their support.
“As a Cape Town newspaper we regard ourselves as part and parcel of the community. It pleases us to be able to contribute even in a small way towards the development of our children.
“These are the future leaders and it becomes a duty or responsibility of all of us individually and collectively to reach out when appeals are made from schools such as Greenlands Primary. As a newspaper we urge all Capetonians to do what they can to support schools in our communities.”
The Cape Argus will also be giving the school five copies of the newspaper every day.
