- LANCE WITTEN

AT 165 YEARS old, and the oldest pub in South Africa, the Forrester’s Arms - or Forries, as it is affectionately known - is not the newest kid on the block.

But, it’s the kind of pub that keeps pushing the boundaries of culinary mastery, serving up an eclectic mix of traditional pub grub and designer cuisine.

The menu boasts everything from bangers and mash, to a gourmet lamb burger, pizzas and grills to die for.

Not only that, but there are some 23 craft beers on tap.

With a delightful play area for the kids, a secure scented garden, plenty of big-screen TVs, and warm fireplaces indoors for cold winter evenings, it’s the perfect place for any group of people.

The menu caters for every taste; if you’re banting or on a paleo diet, there are options for that, vegetarians and vegans are well catered for, and the rest of us have a literal smorgasbord from which to order.

Specials include a full carvery on Sundays for between R148 and R178 for when you’re feeling lazy, or if it’s been a while since you indulged in your mum’s Sunday best.

You’ll find yourself spending an entire afternoon in Forries among good company, and might find yourself staying for dinner too.

It has the warmth of an old friend’s lounge, with the staff, atmosphere and hospitality to match.
