‘Psychopath’ Wilson a danger to others

- Robin-Lee Francke

MULTI-murderer Cameron Wilson was a psychopath who is a danger to others, the court was told during his sentencing procedure in the Western Cape High Court.

Wilson, 20, from Heinz Park was convicted of 13 of the 15 charges he faced.

Professor Shaun Kaliski, a forensic psychiatrist, testified that he conducted assessments on Wilson while he was incarcerated in Valkenberg Hospital on orders of the court. During his evaluation he found no significant mental illnesses.

“The severity and frequency of his violent behaviour is sufficient evidence that he possesses the capacity to commit extreme violence. He also scored high on the Psychopath Checklist which adds to the impression that he is a psychopath. The accused should be considered a danger to the physical and mental wellbeing of others,” Kaliski said.

Wilson’s lawyer, advocate Mohamed Sibda, asked whether environmental factors or genetics could be to blame, as Wilson’s father, Abraham Wilson, was currently in jail for a triple murder in Bishop Lavis.

“The consensus is that psychosis comes from a generic component, but environmental factors cannot be ruled out. There is no way of knowing which one it is,” Kaliski said.

Earlier, probation officer, Natalie Choto, in her report on Wilson stated that he grew up in a loving and supportive home and saw his father as his mentor.

“The concerned (Wilson) is not sickly, has no history of mental illnesses and he is rather normal, thus he could be returned to prison. The concerned (sic) sees his father as his mentor and, at Goodwood Correctional Facility, correctional officers allowed the two to spend quality time together,” Choto said.

Since Wilson was transferred back to Pollsmoor Prison, he has been in a single cell for his own protection. “He admitted he has belonged to the 28s gang since 2015 and opted willingly to join the gang as part of survival and protection in prison. I was informed he is currently in a single cell for his own safety as other inmates are aware of the offences… and threatened his life,” Chota said.

The case resumes today.
