Quarter-finals of schools quiz wraps up

- Theolin Tembo

ONE of the last of the quarter-finals of the Cape Argus Food Lover’s Market High Schools Quiz took place at Sea Point High School yesterday, which saw four teams duke it out to move onto the semifinals rounds.

It was a tense and tough battle with the quiz master barely able to finish the questions before the kids were eagerly pressing their buzzers. One memorable moment was when the quiz master asked, “Who is the president of the ANC?” only for the buzzer to go off before the question was completed.

A pupil from South Peninsula High School answered “Bathabile Dlamini” and was given the points, as the full question was: “Who is the president of the ANC Women’s League?”

The quiz tests the youngsters’ knowledge of news and current affairs based on information found within the pages of the Cape Argus.

On Saturday, the first of the two semi-finals of the quiz started at Oaklands High School, where the top two teams moved onto the final. At the end of the entire round, only eight teams will progress, two of which are Heathfield High School and South Peninsula High School, the two teams that received the highest points in their knock-out round.

“We’ve worked so hard and going through to the super finals is so amazing, because this is the furthest we’ve ever made it since we entered,” said Grade 12 pupil Taahirah Galant, from Heathfield High School.

“It was a really tough competition, they were all really good,” said the team from South Peninsula High School. When asked if they had what it takes to go all the way to the final, the pupils were quick to reply: “Obviously.” The high schools teams are competing for their share of R200 000.
