Serial killer to know fate tomorrow

- Theolin Tembo

CAMERON Wilson, described by experts as a psychopathic serial killer and found guilty of five murders, including that of Lekita Moore, should have his background taken into consideration as a mitigating factor before he is sentenced.

So said his defence lawyer as closing arguments were heard before Wilson’s sentencing.

Judge Chantel Fortuin handed down a guilty verdict on five counts of murder, four of attempted murder, two of assault and rape, one of the possession of an illegal firearm and one of the possession of illegal ammunition.

His defence lawyer, Mohamed Sidba, argued Wilson, 21, should not be penalised for his lack of remorse as that is one of the traits of his alleged personality.

Sidba also argued that his client’s absence of a previous criminal record, his age and his poor socio-economic background be taken into consideration.

“Wilson’s case is an extreme example of what is part and parcel of what happens on the Cape Flats.”

Sidba also said the court heard that “being labelled with psychopathic behaviour, doesn’t mean people will commit violent acts”.

He said public opinion shouldn’t play a part and that Wilson was upset that he was referred to as a monster in the media. Sidba said regardless of his actions, he is a human being.

The State argued that Wilson should receive the appropriate sentencing, with the minimum ranging from 15 years to life.

Wilson was arrested in September in connection with the murder of 18-year-old Moore in Valhalla Park while out on bail for the murder of Stacey-Lee Mohale, 16, in Heinz Park in April 2015, and for assaulting her friend Abigail Plaatjies.

Moore was stabbed 98 times and her naked body was discovered in an open field near 8ste Laan informal settlement.

Sentence will be passed tomorrow.
