Cape school wins media classroom

- MALUSI RAYI Communications: Department of Water and Sanitation Western Cape

YET another remarkable achievement by a disadvantaged Western Cape school.

The saying “today’s youth are tomorrow’s leaders” was given a boost when the Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation (DWS) Pamela Tshwete handed over a media classroom to the Injongo Primary School in Khayelitsha on August 18.

Last year, the Injongo Primary School scooped the first prize of the Baswa Le Meetse (BLM) National competition, a programme under the 2020 Vision aimed at Grade 6 pupils.

In the competition they can choose to compete from five categories: drama, poster, music, praise poetry and poetry. Injongo Primary won the music category.

The prize is a media classroom sponsored by the MTN Foundation, with 21 computers with internet connection and preloaded scientific programmes.

The principal of Injongo Primary, Sithembele Mhletywa, said “despite the fact that the school is facing challenges of resources, they beat the odds and won this prestigious competition”.

It was not the first time a Western Cape school won the BLM Competition. Earlier winners are Amstelhof Primary, Paarl, and Hibernia Primary, George.

Giventhat South Africa is water-scarce, DWS has made a call for partnership with communities to participate actively in water resource management.

“Water is life, Sanitation is Dignity”.
