Copperheads proving a huge success story

-

THE CITY’S metal theft unit, commonly known as the Copperheads, has confiscated more than 2 tons of stolen overhead copper cabling since July. The success comes as the unit prepares to further strengthen its enforcement.

It was established in 2007 to help address the increase in cable and metal theft at City facilities. It has since expanded, given the scale of theft.

Earlier this year, the powers of law enforcement agencies were strengthened to enforce the Second-Hand Goods Act. This means officers can now execute search warrants on properties, conduct search-and-seizure operations and seal off premises.

“Cable theft continues to be a challenge, and often the same suspects are arrested time and again. The additional powers will now also allow our staff to act more decisively against scrap dealers,” said mayco member for safety and security, and social services, JP Smith.

The additional powers would be used to help the City deliver services to residents and create safer communities, he said.

Since the first half of this year, the Copperheads have conducted more than 780 inspections of scrapyards and bucket shops and made 33 arrests. They also confiscated 139kg of brass, 21kg of heavy steel and 17m of copper streetlight cable. The unit also picked up hotspots for metal theft and illegal traders, which include areas such as Bonteheuwel, Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plain and Ocean View.
