Take a walk down litter-free road

- WILMOT ARENDSE Kuilsriver

A STREET called Litter Free.

It is going to be a lovely day – the mission is to stand up and take a walk in your street. The first stop is just up the road to the park and what a shock to see. The park is turned into an illegal dump site filled with domestic waste. Did the neighbours forget trash day and all of a sudden when the wheelie bins overflowed the park was an easy target?

Then proceed to Uncle Johnny, who religiously cleans every day in front of his house, the question to him would be why?

The simple answer: “I do it for my community and to install a sense of pride.”

This gesture makes perfect sense and echoes Mother Teresa’s idea if you start cleaning in front of your home it will be infectious to others.

The next stop will be at the beautiful street garden started on a sidewalk by Aunty Gafsa with lots of local creativity and some plants. The question to her would be why?

The simple answer, “I do it to brighten up my community and to make a lasting difference.”

The fourth stop back to home sweet home and you reflect and ask yourself, “What have I learnt from the walk and what can I do to make a difference in my community in relation to dumping and littering?”

The challenge for all of us is to start something and being infected by Uncle Johnny and Aunty Gafsa and to act.

This will activate more streets to take collective responsibility and raise awareness to #Clean Your Hood.
