Indigent grants for metro ratepayers

-

THE CITY has urged all eligible residents to apply for the indigent grants available to them.

Each year provision is made for rebates and free basic services for indigent residents and pensioners, mayoral committee member for finance Johan van der Merwe said.

The grants were designed to assist struggling individuals, pensioners, businesses, people with disabilities, sports clubs, and non-profit organisations to continue to receive their basic city services.

“The indigent grant is available to our tenants who rent a home from the city as well,” Van der Merwe said.

Criteria to be considered for indigent support included residents’ income, employment status, whether they are senior citizens or a person with a disability, and whether they are full-time occupants of their houses.

““If their property valuation is of R400 000 or less, and if they qualify for the grant, it is possible for some applicants to receive a 100% rebate on their property rates and to receive other basic services for free,” he said.

For homeowners to apply for the grant, they first needed to register as an indigent with the City. Residents under the age of 60 had to reapply for the grant each year, while those over 60 only had to apply once every three years within the general valuation cycle.
