Poo-thrower aims for provincial post

Andile Lili vows to stay in his community and fight for it

- Jason Felix

CAPE Town’s infamous poo-thrower, Andile Lili, is now vying for the position of ANC provincial chairman. Also believed to be in the leadership race is ANC MPL Richard Dyantyi, who served as an MEC for local government in former Western Cape premier Lynne Brown’s provincial cabinet.

Lili and Dyantyi now join Cameron Dugmore, ANC MPL; Sammy Claasen, ANC spokesperson for the party’s West Coast region; Deputy Police Minister Bongani Mkongi; and former ANC MP Randy Pieterse, who have been nominated unofficially by members to contest the top job.

The ANC in the province is set to hold its provincial general council (PGC) meeting next month to elect a new chairperson.

Lili said he would be honoured to contest for the job.

“It is something my comrades want me to do. There is no doubt that I will accept the nomination when we have our PGC. Absolutely no doubt at all,” he said.

Lili shocked many when he and Loyiso Nkohla, now with the DA, dumped raw human waste at Cape Town International Airport and on the steps of the Western Cape Legislature.

Lili said he would use the same strategy he used to develop the Ses’Khona People’s Rights Movement.

“Ses’Khona was built on the premise of community engagement. We stayed in the area and we fight for the people who live right next to us.

“That was our main goal and we built our success on that. People are still behind us,” he said.

He likened the current ANC leadership to celebrities who have lost touch with ordinary South Africans.

“I can never move out of Khayelitsha and live in the fancy areas of Cape Town.

“I can’t do that to my people. The current ANC leadership have lost respect for their voters.

“ANC members are not valued as they are supposed to be. We must give all members the right to elect the leaders they want, the process currently can easily be manipulated,” he said.

Lili also hopes for the support of the ANC’s alliance partners (SACP and Cosatu) as well as other formations. “I believe I can take the province forward for everyone that lives in it. There are enough resources for all of us. And that should be distributed equally among everyone,” he said.

Dyantyi was also touted as a candidate, but is yet to confirm whether he will avail himself.

Former provincial chairperson Marius Fransman was axed from the ANC for five years after a sexual harassment complaint by a 21-year-old Stellenbosch woman, while Khaya Magaxa, who acted as chairperson, has said he wants to step down to focus on his role as SACP provincial secretary.

No date had been set for the PGC but it is planned for mid October.
