Twiggs spurns ‘feeble’ ANC talk

- Jason Felix

NEWLY elected DA Metro chairperson Grant Twigg said the ANC in the Western Cape has lost all political relevance with its “feeble arguments”.

Twigg’s reaction comes after the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) Western Cape urged Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille to step down from the DA after her former Independent Democrats (ID) metro leader, Shaun August was defeated as leader of the DA in the metro.

“De Lille joined the DA as leader of the ID. The ID is dead and buried. De Lille and those who she brought in from the ID do not have the support of the DA members. She should step down now or she will be sidelined as mayor by the die-hard DA members,” ANCYL leader in the province Muhammad Sayed said.

“De Lille was already forced to resign as provincial leader of the DA. Now is the time to step aside. We urge all members of the ID, especially youth activists, to leave the DA and join or work with formations that are more inclusive and respectful of black people,” Sayed said.

Twigg was elected at the DA’s Metro regional AGM on Saturday, the DA said. A total of 307 voting delegates participated in the elective AGM ahead of the provincial congress to be held on October 7. Twigg was elected regional chairman while JP Smith, Anda Ntsodo, and Phindile Maxiti were elected regional deputy chairpeople.

Ian Iversen was elected Metro regional chairman of finance and Desiree Visagie was elected Metro regional secretary. The Metro regional additional members elected were Malusi Booi, Matthew Kempthorne, Rob Quintas and Elizabeth Cloete.

Twigg said the ANC should take notes from the DA instead of sending out frivolous media statements.

“I am not going to waste my time to respond to the ANC. They should rather take notes from us on how to govern properly.

“They have their factional battles. We (the DA) should be the last of their worries.”
