Drift City Show gives all a lift
CAPE Town’s Drift City Motor show was held at the Grand Parade. The event is in its second year. Last year’s inaugural event was a huge success and on Sunday the event was bigger and better with Cape Town’s best drivers who went head to head on an improved technical professional track for the championship title.
The show attracted 3 500-4 000 spectators and the colourful adrenaline-chasing event kicked up a lot of smoke as some of Cape Town’s best drivers competed to drift on to the podium.
Entertainment on the day included a myriad activities such as the Driftkhana competition, skate park, car and bike displays, an exhibitor area and live acts by Sound Demonstrations, Spectator Drift Rides. This family event also included a Kids Entertainment Area.
Mayoral committee member for safety and security; and social services JP Smith said the City supported the show because it wanted to create a platform where motoring enthusiasts can compete in a safe and controlled space. He added that they were able to ensure safety measures through having a presence of emergency and policing services.
“The City of Cape Town’s support for the show is about creating opportunities where motoring enthusiasts can compete in a controlled, safe and spectator-friendly environment. As a proud sponsor of this event, the City provides services as well as free usage of the Grand Parade.
“By providing a large space to cater for non-traditional forms of motorsport entertainment, we ensure a safer environment for drifting fanatics and patrons,” said Smith.
He also said one of his highlights was the purpose built drifting race car that was won by a participant from George.
Mayoral committee member for assets and facilities management Stuart Diamond said the City partnered with event organisers in order to continue utilising the Grand Parade as a leading venue.
“It is essential this unique space be used as a multi-use cultural venue embraced by all Capetonians. The Drift City event gives meaning to the City’s Organisational Development and Transformation Plan by building integrated communities and providing a safe environment,” said Diamond.
