‘Scandal’ star Christopher is a voice for supreme women

- KEDIBONE MODISE

TELEVISION star Kgomotso Christopher is no stranger to playing strong female characters, so her latest venture shouldn’t come as a surprise.

She was recently unveiled as the ambassador for e.tv’s Supreme Women campaign.

At a media launch at the serene Mowana Spa, Christopher, who is even more stunning in person, shed some light on her new role.

Aside from being over the moon at being the selected for the campaign, which celebrates award-winning local and international dramas with powerful women at the helm, she is still full of beans about her role in Scandal.

About the #SupremeWomen campaign, she enthused: “For me as an African woman, I believe you can find supreme women in every corner. They’re in our boardrooms, they are in a shack raising the doctors of tomorrow, because of the sheer character that is a woman.”

The Scandal star’s passion is unmistakable as she chats about women taking their place as forerunners in the media industry. “It’s high time we say these supreme women exist in our lives, so why doesn’t the content reflect that? Why does the content always reflect a male lead, surrounded by women who are weak?

“It’s lovely that broadcasters like e.tv are beginning to embrace the story of women and where we are today.” In the past year, since leaving the local soapie

Isidingo, Christopher has been involved in other projects including the SABC 2 drama, Thola.

She explains: “I had a very busy year, a year into Scandal! I did a drama series on SABC 2, ironically, that entered only recently. Now I’m full-time on Scandal as YV. And that takes up 100% of my time, I don’t even get time to do my nails – that’s why I was very excited to take a day go to the spa for a full-body massage. It was a chance to switch off and relax.” Christopher is also part of a new local film,

Zulu Wedding, which is due to release later in the year. The film features the likes of Pallance Dladla, Bubu Mazibuko, S’thandiwe Kgoroge, Nondumiso Tembe and Lorcia Cooper – all of them working alongside international actors Darrin Dewitt Henson and Carl Anthony Payne II.

With her work on the soapie monopolising much of her diary, she tries her best to ensure it doesn’t eat into family time.

She explains: “The most important thing is to be realistic. I’m not one of those artists who does everything. I think that balancing comes with being very choosy about what you do.”

But she enjoys her work – especially when it means getting to act alongside Jerry Mofokeng, who plays Bra Moscow.

Christopher admits: “He is incredible. Whatever he touches, whatever he does, it’s just incredible. He’s someone I met when I was in high school. I saw him from across the road and stopped him, asking that he please sign my homework diary and he did.

“So many years later, I never thought he would be a close colleague of mine. He is still an inspiration and I still look up to him.”

What’s next? More “scandal” of course – but it’s scripted! ● Catch Kgomotso Christopher on e.tv, weekdays at 7pm.
