Why did my brother die in custody?
HIS BROTHER died in police custody and he wants to know what happened and who is responsible.
But it is has been two months and Gerald Faro still has no idea how his brother, Derrick la Guma, died. La Guma, 44, was arrested about two months ago for housebreaking in Kuils River.
“Derrick was supposed to appear in court on July 20. He was going to call me after the court case, but I did not hear anything from him. I called the police station and Kuils River magistrate’s court, but could not locate him.
“A few weeks later we were informed that he died. This we heard from someone who was in the same police cell with him. According to the inmate, he was attacked inside the cell and died due to his injuries,” said Faro.
“We waited a month for his body to be released from the morgue, so that we could have a funeral. His death certificate only states that his death is under investigation,” Faro said.
Independent Police Investigative Directorate spokesperson Moses Dlamini said: “The only outstanding investigation in this matter is the crime scene photos.
“A copy of the docket where the deceased was detained must be obtained. The investigation will likely be concluded in October, then the matter will be referred to the Director for Public Prosecutions for a decision.”
