UDF pickets against corruption

VETERAN members of the United Democratic Front (UDF) picketed alongside Right2Know and the newly-formed organisati­on #UniteBehin­d outside the National Prosecutin­g Authority’s offices in Cape Town to protest state corruption.

They delivered a letter to the head of the NPA, Shaun Abrahams, demanding that action be taken against individual­s who are involved in corruption.

“Comrades, it’s a travesty and a crying shame that we have to beg these institutio­ns to investigat­e issues. Today we have to demand that the institutio­ns protect our people. These are not the institutio­ns we fought for, ” spokespers­on of the UDF, Zelda Holtzman, said.

The UDF delivered a similar letter last month when they joined #UniteBehin­d’s coalition march to Parliament calling for President Jacob Zuma to be removed from office. In the letter, the veterans urged Abrahams to withdraw his appeal against prosecutio­n of 783 charges against president Zuma.

“We are here today to say do your duty. When we organised as UDF, we organised on a grassroots level with all communitie­s around all issues affecting their daily lives,” Holtzman said.

The UDF lambasted Abrahams’s response to the letter as “inadequate”. At the picket yesterday the UDF submitted a list of key areas that should be investigat­ed.

Among them is the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa). The veterans are calling for an investigat­ion into the railway giant after an internal forensic
