The Color Run’s water plan

- TREVOR LATIMER National Event Co-ordinator The Color Run South Africa

AS READERS are no doubt aware, Cape Town is hosting The Color Run on November 18.

There have been some deep concerns raised (and rightly so) by Capetonians, on what our plans are to safeguard the city’s water resources.

This year we saw the Superhero Tour, which each city has embraced uniquely. In Cape Town, we are leading the charge to raise awareness and inspire every participant to escalate Water Warrior to Superhero status.

The Color Run Cape Town will be launching a campaign to inform participants on how to enjoy The Color Run, without using any more water than what is required for normal daily hygiene. Go to our social media channels for useful tips.

Globally, The Color Run adheres to the principal of community. Locally, we have a proud heritage of raising funds for needy schools in each area we visit. In Cape Town, we are including education about water conservation in this outreach.

The Color Run will ensure that Cape Town will benefit from us being here – and that includes leaving Cape Town cleaner than we found it.

We will be using only non-potable water for cleaning, only when necessary. This will be sourced from accredited suppliers, and from neighbouring regions where no Level 5 restrictions are in place.

Drinking water is being brought in from neighbouring regions. Any excess water, drinking and non-potable, will be donated to the City.

We are using massive PVC sheeting to collect all the coloured powder. We also have industrial vacuum cleaners to clean up any residue. As the powder is non-staining, there is no need to wash it away.

We are also using muscles. This will provide temporary employment for residents who will set up, break down, and clean up before and after the run.

The Color Run is collecting all the very colourful race tees after the event and will clean them in an area where there’s water to spare, and distribute them to the needy.

The Color Run has innovated in response to the dire drought, and we’ve done so without sacrificing the fun, the health, the happiness, and our charity initiatives. We can’t wait to share “The Happiest 5K” on the Planet with you!
