School in Delft eyes new status

- Rusana Philander

A SCHOOL which is excelling in 10 sporting codes wants to become the first sports school in Delft.

Virgil Fritz, the sport co-ordinator at Rosendaal High School, said one of the pupils at the school currently plays for Ajax soccer club. The 10 sporting codes the school has are: rugby, soccer, volleyball, handball, netball, cricket, athletics, cross-country, hurdles and swimming.

“A lot of the children at the school have also obtained Western Province colours in most of the sporting codes. We want to build a rugby and soccer field as well as an athletics track. Currently we have to go to other facilities to practise.

“The school also wants to install a proper fence, because criminals are breaking in, as well as 24-hour security to ensure the sporting equipment is not vandalised,” he said.

Chrizelda Layman, principal of Rosendaal High School, added: “This shows the kind of talent we have at the school. Every year we have our sports awards and our children are excelling every year.

“Due to the bad condition of our field our children can also not play cricket. But if we get sponsorships, we will be able to build a better field on which the children could practise their sports.

“Our children come from poor circumstances. These communities are suffering from negative social challenges such as gang violence and drug abuse. And sport is also a great way of restoring pride,” she said.
