New school cracks nod from MECs

- Rusana Philander

A NEW state-of-the-art school costing R60 million in Blue Downs, Eerste River, which will accommodate 1 200 pupils, will open next year.

The Eerste River High School was visited by MEC for Education Debbie Schafer and the MEC for transport and public works, Donald Grant, yesterday. The new school will consist of 33 standard classrooms, six specialist classrooms, two science laboratories, a multi-media centre and a computer laboratory.

Schafer said the school looked wonderful.

“It is extremely well designed, and there is security at the school. It includes a ramp for disabled people. It also has a borehole that will be used for the irrigation of the sports field, and it will minimise the school’s water account,” she said. The high school will teach pupils from grades 8 to 12.

Schafer added that she wanted the Eerste River community to be proud of the school.

She also appealed to the community to look after it.

“It is important for communities to take ownership of the schools in their area. I hope this new school will be an institution of quality teaching and learning.”

Grant also said: “The Western Cape Education Department will be spending R1.239 billion on refurbishing school infrastructure across the province, the projects for which will be implemented by the Department of Transport and Public Works.”
