‘Hero’ slain in low crime CBD area

-

THE City’s safety and security directorate said the crime rate in the CBD remains very low and the attack on Daniel Ullrich was an unusual incident in the area.

Ullrich died when he tried to help two women who were being mugged in Kloof Street.

Police spokesperson FC van Wyk said Ullrich was stabbed in the neck after he chased a suspect.

The chairperson of Cape Town CPF, Marc Truss, said he was a neighbour of Ullrich’s.

“We weren’t best of mates but we always chatted and I knew his family and it was sad to find out it was Daniel lying there on the street.”

Truss said the most common crime in the CBD included theft, common robbery and housebreaking.

“This incident is a very unusual incident and it is not an everyday occurrence.”

Ullrich’s friends called him a hero as they shared their grief in messages on Facebook.

Claire Robertson said: “Absolutely heartbroken. Daniel Ullrich, Most beautiful boy and happy smile whenever I crossed your path. I cannot believe you have been taken from us.So incredibly sad to hear. You are a hero.”

Mayoral committee member for safety, security and social services JP Smith said the crime rate in the CBD remained “much lower than many troubled parts” of the city. – Staff Reporter
