Enjoy Cape jazz with a Taiwanese flavour
AS PART of a special Taipei-Cape collaboration, made possible by the Spotlight Taiwan Project, visiting Taiwanese jazz musicians Chi-pin Hsieh (jazz violin) and Kai-ya Chang (piano) will join forces with Cape Town jazz musicians Amanda Tiffin, Shaun Johannes and Kevin Gibson to present a series of special performances this weekend.
The music of Chipin Hsieh and Kai-ya Chang is a unique blend of jazz, classical and traditional Taiwanese elements. They have created their own distinctive sound which traverses a wide selection of musical styles: swing, bop, fusion and funk. They love to add “Taiwanese flavour” into their original music – childhood memories, life scenes, local landscapes and customs; even tasty snacks are all integrated into their compositions and improvisations, resulting in a kind of oriental jazz style.
The velvet voice of jazz vocalist Amanda Tiffin will be blended with Hsieh’s soulful violin, backed by the dynamic rhythms of Gibson, Johannes, and Chang.
The Spotlight Taiwan initiative is facilitated by the Taipei Liaison Office, Cape Town, through the Ministry of Culture, Taiwan. The project seeks to cultivate a greater interest in, and appreciation of, Taiwan’s culture worldwide.
The concerts will be held tomorrow at the Kronendal Music Academy in Hout Bay at 7pm and on Sunday at the Olympia Bakery, Kalk Bay at 6pm.
Tickets for Kronendal cost R130. Book through Quicket or call 021 790 4457. Olympia Bakery tickets are R150 through Quicket or contact Paul Kahanovitz on 082 892 0350. For more information call 021 434 4951/ 082 892 5877.
