KwaZulu-Natal ANC’s nominations meeting postponed

- Bongani Hans

ANC spokesperson in KwaZulu-Natal Mdumiseni Ntuli said that the provincial general council meeting (PGC), scheduled for this weekend, has been postponed. “We have just been informed about a national executive committee (NEC) meeting this weekend, and we cannot hold our PGC. The provincial secretary might decide that we hold our PGC on Monday and Tuesday,” he said.

Ntuli said the purpose of the PGC would be to consolidate all nominations from branch general meetings so that the province could reveal its official candidates for the top leadership to be elected in Johannesburg next month. He said the PGC would be held in Durban, and either President Jacob Zuma or ANC treasurer-general Zweli Mkhize would deliver a keynote address.

KwaZulu-Natal ANC’s provincial executive committee had declared its support for former AU Commission chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma as its presidential candidate. Ntuli said the NEC had informed provinces that functions of the PGCs had changed.

“This time, the electoral committee will open nomination boxes from the BGMs, consolidate them and then give us official numbers of how many branches nominated and who they nominated.”

In the Western Cape out of 145 branches, 121 nominated Ramaphosa, while only 13 indicated that their delegates would vote for Dlamini Zuma.

In the Northern Cape, Ramaphosa received 154 nominations while Dlamini Zuma 11. Ntuli said unofficial stats in KwaZulu-Natal showed Dlamini Zuma had been nominated by 496 branches, followed by Ramaphosa with 175 branch nominations and Mkhize with six. KZN is the biggest province in terms of delegates.
