Marikana murders: residents live in fear

- Lucinda Dordley

THE COMMUNITY of Marikana, Philippi East, is living in fear following a shooting on Saturday night that left at least two people dead.

It is believed the shooting, which took place around 10.30pm, was gang-related.

Three people were seriously injured and are recovering in hospital.

The shooting, which residents believed to have been a random incident, happened at a local shebeen.

Marikana had become a hot spot of gang activity recently, and residents feared for their lives, a community leader said.

“The police are trying their best to keep the situation under control,” Duran Naki, a community member said. “However, it’s difficult to feel safe even with them around.

“We live in fear, because when the police leave, the people who shoot and stab are still here in the community, and they will strike again.”

Community leader Xolani Tukwayo said: “Things have quietened down since the restlessness of Saturday night. Our community members are afraid, but the police are here to remedy the situation. Their presence is already making things easier.”

Cases of a double murder and attempted murder have been opened by the police.

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk assured the community the police were taking steps to ensure the perpetrators were caught.

He requested that any information be forwarded to Detective Constable Luyte on 079 880 9813.
