High flyers do schools proud
QUITE a few schools located in impoverished and disadvantaged areas received awards for excellence and most-improved schools at this year’s National Senior Certificate Award.
The schools include Aloe High School (Mitchells Plain), Fisantekraal (Durbanville), Delft Technical High School, Atlantis Secondary School, Tafelsig Secondary, Oval North Secondary, Mondale High (Mitchells Plain), Trafalgar High (Cape Town), Bernadino Heights High (Kraaifontein) and Spes Bona Secondary (Athlone) schools.
Deon Wertheim, principal of Bernadino Heights High, said he was very proud.
“My matriculants worked very hard. These were the same matric class learners who witnessed how they shot someone outside the school last year. But despite this we had a pass rate of 99.6%,” he said.
Bernadino Heights received an award for most-improved school in computer applications technology.
Owen Bridgens, principal of Mondale High School in Mitchells Plain, said he was also very proud. The school received an award for excellence for accounting. “This award is a big boost for the school and I am very proud of the learners.”
Yazeed Tyman, a pupil from Mondale High School, also received an award for excellence in academic achievement. “I am very excited about the award. It was lots of hard work. But I also want to thank my teachers and principal. I plan to study accounting at Stellenbosch University,” he said.
Delft Technical High School’s principal Cleophas Noel, also received an award for improved school. “Our school’s pass rate went from 35% a few years ago to 77.5%,” he said.
