Cops crack down on drugs and guns in Nyanga

SIX POLICE stations were involved in a crackdown on drugs and illegal arms in the Nyanga Cluster this weekend.

A total of 212 people were apprehende­d as members from various police stations in the cluster conducted random searches of houses regularly associated with illegal activities. A total of 249 residences were searched and produced a yield of drugs and illegal arms.

A total of 924g of tik, 423g of heroine, 3.696kg marijuana and 18 996 mandrax tablets were discovered on these properties. A total of 116 shebeens were also raided and resulted in 18 alcohol-related arrests.

A further 36 wanted criminals were captured during the tracing operations and three illegal firearms were discovered in Bishop Lavis.

A total of 3 130 vehicle checkpoint­s were conducted throughout the Nyanga Cluster and yielded four previously stolen vehicles.

Seven suspects were arrested for the possession of possibly stolen goods and a total of 41 people were apprehende­d for the possession of dangerous weapons.

Operation Reclaim was also employed this weekend, which is an initiative whereby Cape Town Traffic Services track down motorists with outstandin­g fines.

A total of 2 750 warrants were successful­ly executed and 610 suspects were arrested. A further 292 suspects were released with a warning. – Staff Reporter
