Style ahead of the Field theme means thinking out the box
WITH the 2018 theme for the The Sun Met celebrated with GH Mumm being “Style ahead of the Field” racegoers are encouraged to dress in an eclectic mix of vibrant colours, prints and intricate fabrics that celebrate our colourful African heritage and cultures with a touch of modern.
Think Afro-chic, where you embrace and flaunt your African roots in African fabrics while adding a modern twist in the form of silhouettes, fabrics and futuristic statement accessories.
Whatever look you decide on, don’t be afraid to explore by mixing and matching clashing prints and fabrics.
It’s okay if you are not ready for bold prints; style your muted hues with subtle printed detailing.
For example, gentlemen, add some pop to your one-colour suit with a printed tie or pocket square.
And, for the ladies, a stylish printed headwrap, or a beaded necklace and bracelet, will fit right in with the theme.

Race Day means you will be on your feet for most of the day. Do wear comfortable shoes and ditch pencil-thin high heels. I always choose sneakers or a pair of brogues. Both are super-comfy to dance in at the after party. If flats are not for you, wedges or a block heel will provide the support you need for walking on the grass field.
Do make a statement in classic and simple silhouettes. If you are wearing a bright colour, keep your make-up and accessories simple to avoid looking "busy".
Don't forget to lather on sunscreen. I recommend an oil-based sunscreen, after moisturising your face, as it’s non-sticky and it will give you a lovely glow .
Don’t show too much flesh; keep it classy and race day-chic without revealing too much skin. The day is likely to be sunny and hot, so opt for breathable and light fabrics such as mesh, chiffon and linen. Consider these styles: an off-the-shoulder dress, a deep V-neck or a low back will keep you cool.
Do accessories with glamorous sunglasses and a chic hat or headpiece. Don’t limit yourself into thinking the theme limits you to its “keyword” or obvious interpretation. Don’t forget your hat. Don’t wear shorts to a horse-racing event. Don’t dress too matchy to your partner. Don’t complicate your outfit with too many styles or colours. Less is more. Always pay attention to detail. Instead of exactly “matching” your partner, let your outfit complement theirs. Be creative, dress your suit up, down and sideways with the theme in mind. Think out of the box. Remember the theme extends beyond just “Africa” which most people will think means they should dress in African attire.
