Pienaar could be heading for Cape Town to join Benni’s City

- MINENHLE MKHIZE

CAPE TOWN CITY are thinking about signing former Bafana Bafana captain Steven “Schillo” Pienaar, according to City boss John Comitis.

Pienaar recently parted ways with Bidvest Wits earlier this month. He was spotted at the Cape Town derby between Cape Town City and Ajax Cape Town this past weekend.

Comitis said that City coach Benni McCarthy will have the last word on Schillo. The duo played together for Bafana Bafana.

Pienaar’s contract with Wits was terminated after he failed to make an impact at the club. He spent 16 years playing in different countries in Europe and made 61 appearances for Bafana.

City have shown their desire to sign big-name players, with notable examples being Lehlohonolo “Major” Majoro, Victor Obinna, Teko Modise and Ayanda Patosi. They were also interested in Brilliant Khuzwayo from Kaizer Chiefs.

Another top player who has been linked with City is Tokelo Rantie, but Comitis dismissed this talk.

“I’ve never spoken to Rantie. I don’t know where is that coming from. We MANCHESTER UNITED have signed Chile forward Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal in a deal that sees midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan move the other way, the Premier League clubs said on Monday. The 29-year-old Sanchez, who was out of contract at Arsenal at the end of the season, has joined United after their local rivals Manchester City had pulled out of the running. Sanchez said: “I am thrilled to be joining the biggest club in the world.” recently signed a striker from Kenya (Masoud Juma). He was waiting for his work permit,” Comitis elaborated.

City are second on the log with 30 points after 18 matches, and trail the log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by three points.

“Our goal this season was to be in the hunting pack. We are doing okay but we can be better. We have to keep on going,” Comitis said.

Meanwhile, Mazola Molefe reports that Steve Komphela stopped short of describing Kaizer Chiefs’ home fixture against Sundowns on Saturday as a potential title decider.

The Amakhosi coach was being cautious, but the reality is that the encounter will go someway in determining whether his side can topple the Brazilians or give them an added advantage in the championship chase – a win reducing the gap at the top to just two points, while defeat could mean eight points is a bridge too far.

“We said last week that it’s game on,” said Komphela after Chiefs’ come-from-behind 2-1 win over Baroka FC on Sunday.

“It is show time all the way. It is going to be very interesting. Sundowns are doing well. We are also hitting some form and getting goals. This is a big team. One thing that people must not forget is that this team is big. A positive run doesn’t surprise us, but we get angry when it’s not coming. So winning is normal. The only thing is that when we draw, to us it feels like a loss.”

Sundowns were far more convincing when they thumped bottom of the table Platinum Stars 3-0 a day earlier, with coach Pitso Mosimane heaping praises on what he labelled the best squad in his five years at Chloorkop.

“We still have 12 matches to go. The road is still long, so it’s one match at a time. But it was important for us to keep within touching distance and it makes for an interesting match (on Saturday night),” said Komphela.

“It’s a direct confrontation. I don’t want to term it now because you will read headlines about what I said about this match. Everybody will have the desire to want to win it.”

“I think that is one thing we need to highlight, that maybe our character is being built,” Komphela said.
