Setting record straight about DA meeting
MY letter responding to “Maimane has no advanced solutions (Cape Argus January 25)” refers.
I was present at the meeting held at the Joseph Stone Auditorium and advise that the atmosphere was most cordial, and DA leader Mmusi Maimane’s presentation most encouraging and informative. Amid all the misinformation and confusion, he needed to set the record straight and provide assurance.
He gracefully explained that our drought crisis needed decisive action because it affected all the citizens of the Western Cape, including the Eastern Cape and the Free State, and that it was a national disaster not confined to the three provinces only. He explained the pragmatism addressing our greatest challenge, yet with crucial points: Where we are at What we're doing What we all need to do The crisis did not call for politicking. It was an opportunity for all citizens to act responsibly.
Maimane’s presentation was brief, but powerful, covering the salient points effectively, until the single individual outburst from Muaath Gabier. Maimane’s response was graceful and he implored Gabier and the audience to speak without fear or favour. Gabier, however, continued to spew vitriolic abuse before being removed. The attendees were upbeat when leaving the meeting having been affirmed that together we can defeat Day Zero.
