JHB to absorb security guards into workforce

-

THE CITY of Johannesburg will absorb 4 000 contract security workers charged with keeping employees and buildings safe.

“I would also like to acknowledge the role played by the EFF in working closely with us to address this matter,” said Mayor Herman Mashaba of the DA.

He said the security guards will be paid R4 500 per month.

“Our approach in this matter was to find a means of offering these contract workers the dignity of fair pay, stable employment and benefits available to employees of the City.”

Mashaba said the initial plan was to employ the workers as early as the first of January.

“Due to complexities of local government regulations, cases of corruption, contractual commitments and legal considerations, the time taken to implement this process was considerable,” he said.

Mashaba said he will announce the implementation timetable for this project in due course.

“Once this has been initiated, we will begin a similar process for workers contracted to provide cleaning services to the City. As part of our implementation process, preference will be given to those security contract workers who provided services to the City at the time the insourcing project was first announced.

“It is rewarding that this achievement has arisen from the collaboration between a multiparty coalition,” Mashaba said.

He said this was an example of the good that can be achieved if political parties work together. – African News Agency (ANA)
