Lace up your shoes, gear up for walk

- Athina May

JOGGERS can lace up their running shoes as they gear up for the annual Wholesome Bread Cape Town Big Walk which is raring to go.

The Big Walk in aid of the Al-Ikhlaas Academia Library and Resource Centre, the Manenberg feeding scheme, the Red Cross Children’s Hospital and the Oliver Tambo Village is scheduled to take place in less than four weeks.

Big Walk office manager Faaid Waggie said applications were streaming in.

“The Big Walk is up and running and we’ve placed the entry forms at stores. Schools are collecting forms and taking part in the schools competition and corporates are placing their entries. Schools in excess of 100 pupils qualify to win a prize of R2 500 for first place, R1 500 for second place and R1 000 for third place.

“Regarding the water policy, a 500ml bottle of water will be given at reception to participants during sign-up, which should be enough for a 5 to 10km walk. This water must be brought along on race day. The water sachets worked well in the past but it’s an environmental disaster,” said Waggie.

Water sachets which were handed out to participants in the past were litter, which was a nightmare for the organisation to tackle. Refreshment points with water containers are still being considered as an additional alternative.

The event which will start at the Cape Town Stadium forecourt is expected to draw a crowd of approximately 20 000 people. The number of people who have already signed up has not been tallied.
