CREATING AWARENESS:
Leading project ambassadors kick off roadshow in Mitchells Plain
International climate activist and former Miss Earth South Africa Catherine Constantinides speaks to pupils at Hazeldene Primary School in Mitchells Plain. The Department of Water and Sanitation, Operation SA and Miss Earth have launched the #SaveWater roadshow at the school.
WATER warriors with one mission in mind – to #savewater – have embarked on a 10-day roadshow, visiting 100 schools across the province. Yesterday, the #savewater ambassadors, the department of water and sanitation, and the Cape Argus began their road show at Hazeldene Primary School in Mitchells Plain.
Ambassadors, including officials from the department of education, the local community police forum, Mitchells Plain Station Commander Brigadier Cass Goolam, and community activists, attended the event.
“We are inspired by the enthusiasm and engagement of learners from the youngest to the oldest. These children are not only learning to #savewater now. They are learning about a new way of life, where we are water conscious,” International Climate Activist Catherine Constantinides said.
Pupils of the school were eager to see what the talk had in store.
After the talk, Constantinides, along with other water ambassadors, gave the children educational worksheets. Miss Earth ambassadors also engaged with the pupils in the classrooms, discussing inspiring #waterheroes.
“It is encouraging to see the kind of reception to the partnership on water awareness amongst our children and educators,” Department of Water and Sanitation spokesperson Sputnik Ratau said.
Chief #savewater ambassador, Yusuf Abramjee, said it was vital for the #savewater, #everydropcounts message to reach every corner of the country.
“We are starting to see some water savings and that is encouraging. If we save more water now, we can avoid ‘Day Zero’,” Abramjee said.
He said that the hashtag, #savewater, had reached many parts of the country.
“We are also in talks with our stakeholders to extend the programme,” Abramjee said.
