Awards for champions of Casual Day cause
THOUSANDS of people with disabilities would be in a dire situation if not for the millions of South Africans who participated in Casual Day 2017 and gave to the cause.
The National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) hosted an awards ceremony at the Cape Town International Convention Centre yesterday to acknowledge the schools and participants who helped to make a difference.
The best-performing schools in the Western Cape were awarded, with West End Primary School in Lentegeur raising the most money.
The awards for schools who raised the most stickers went to Westcott Primary School in Diep River, followed by Wavecrest Primary and EA Janari Primary in Bonteheuwel.
NCPD national director Therina Wentze said millions of rand were raised by those who participated, and the money would be distributed to organisations and associations which boosted the rights that those with disabilities have to job opportunities, educational facilities, leisure activities and day-to-day life.
“It’s for the greater good when persons with disabilities are integrated into society and the economy. It gives authenticity to the diversity that sets our nation apart, adding texture, understanding and empathy and giving persons with disabilities the equity they’re entitled to,” Wentzel said.
“The triumph of a successful Casual Day is that it normalises the diversity that persons with disabilities bring into our communities and society.” – Staff Reporter
