Jonas mum on mayor succession

-

“The mayor made it clear at a public meeting in Gugulethu last week and during a follow-up meeting with the leadership that she cannot give permission for them to settle on any of the land.”

Meanwhile, in Philippi a stand-off between backyard invaders took place.

The fight is over vacant land which was being occupied by another community.

The road was closed off in both directions due to barricades in Govan Mbeki between Stock and Sheffield Road.

“The mayor is also scheduled to meet with the leadership of Philippi backyarders this week.

“City officials are working hard to ensure that they resolve all the concerns raised by the residents of Philippi and Gugulethu within appropriate time frames and by following due process,” Koyana said. FORMER deputy minister of finance Mcebisi Jonas said he is yet to hear from the ANC following the EFF’s suggestions he take over as Nelson Mandela Bay mayor.

“I am a member of the ANC... I will do whatever the ANC tells me to do. There has been no communication from the ANC, so I cannot comment on the issue,” Jonas said.

The EFF said it would table a motion of no confidence in incumbent, DA mayor Athol Trollip, at the Nelson Mandela Bay council next month, to punish the DA for opposing the land expropriation without compensation motion. – African News Agency (ANA)
