Manenberg residents picket

- Athina May

MANENBERG residents marched down their streets with pickets to a nearby construction site, demanding that they be consulted on community developments and possible job creation opportunities in the area.

Amelia September said developments in the community unfolded without resident consultation, and this has been to their detriment as their ideas for job creation or community development are not taken into account.

“We continue to be marginalised in a democracy which continues to fail the people,” September said.

“The resources in the hands of the City belong to the people, and the people should determine how these resources are to be used and how it will benefit development of the community.

“The City is rolling out a development plan in Manenberg without involving the people of Manenberg in the process.

“This has lead to contractors from outside Manenberg coming into our community and giving our people the low-paying jobs.”

Mario Wanza said the City has a budget for Manenberg and determines how to use it without consulting the people.

Ward 42 councillor Sonwabo Ngxumza said the residents contacted him earlier this week regarding their concerns.

Although Ngxumza agreed to meet with them and discuss their issues on Friday, they protested regardless.
