Four killed on roads over weekend

-

FOUR people were killed, including a cyclist, on the province’s roads this weekend.

Provincial Traffic Chief Kenny Africa said a cyclist collided on Constantia Main Road yesterday.

The Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust confirmed that the crash involved a group of 20 cyclists.

“One of the cyclists, a 40-year-old male, received immediate medical attention at the scene but, tragically, his injuries proved fatal,” said the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust.

Africa said two male drivers died and one female pedestrian was killed on the roads.

The pedestrian was knocked over in Matjiesrivier in Oudtshoorn.

Africa said one of the male drivers killed this weekend was in a crash on the N1 in Matjiesfontein.

He said in a similar crash on the N1 near Kraaifontein another driver died after his vehicle overturned.

ER24’s Werner Vermaak confirmed the incident occurred on Saturday at around 11.30pm.

“Paramedics arrived on the scene, where they found a vehicle that overturned on the N1 outbound near Brighton Road.

“Sadly, one person was found with fatal injuries. Another occupant of the car sustained minor injuries and was later transported to hospital,” he said.

Vermaak said another crash, on Saturday at 11.50pm on Bottelary Road near the Botfontein turn-off, left five people injured.

Vermaak said three vehicles collided with each other.

“Paramedics and local emergency services assisted the injured on scene before they were transported to various hospital in the area,” he said. – Staff Reporter
