Cow costumes and cool causes
BEFORE sunlight could penetrate the dark skies in Cape Town, cyclists were already pedalling their way to the Grand Parade to join thousands of others who made their way to their starting point in sparkly top hats, funky socks and cow costumes.
A few bobbed their heads as Bruno Mars’s 24K Magic pulsated through the air, some did their stretches and others gathered at the big screen to watch competitors who started the race at 5.30am make their way around the Peninsula.
The energy was palpable and cyclists between the ages of 10 and 80 shared the thrill of the Cape Town Cycle Tour.
Their charisma outshone that of the naked cyclists who pitched in their birthday suits the previous day for the “Bare as You Dare” cycle, to raise awareness for cleaner energy and the need to cut down on carbon emissions and to demote body shame.
The cyclists dodged the Cape Town Unites for Animals marchers who also took to the streets on Saturday. The march saw individuals from 85 animal welfare and animal rights organisations take to the streets with placards stating that “Animals are individuals too”.
The group marched in support of a bill asking for the acknowledgement in law of animal sentience, which is due to take place later this year.
Overall, the weekend of activities to raise awareness on various issues was a win for all, including the “passive participants”, who enjoyed the race from their beach chairs dotted along the various routes.
