Foundation types – which is best for your skin?

- Gerry Cupido

FOUNDATION is the most important part of any make-up collection. It’s a no-brainer why it’s called foundation since it forms the basis of any make-up look, providing a smooth surface to work on.

Finding the right shade is vital. Since it needs to offer coverage and blend into the skin, without sitting on the face like a mask. Finding the perfect shade is just one aspect to consider when buying foundation.

Foundations are available in various formulas which each provide different finishes and work best on different skin types.

Here is a breakdown of the different types and what works best for which skin type: Liquid foundations: These are the most popular and basic types – the go-to formula, regardless of your skin type. Whether you’re looking for full or medium coverage, long lasting, moisturising or oil-free, you will find a liquid foundation to suit your specific needs. Try: Woolworth SPF15 Oil Control Liquid Foundation Tinted moisturisers: For those who don’t like the feeling of wearing foundation yet want light coverage for everyday use, tinted moisturisers will do the trick. They work especially well for teenagers and women with good skin. An obvious benefit of tinted foundations is that they doubles up as moisturiser for women with dry skin. Look out for products containing a built-in SPF for a bonus. Try: Bobbi Brown Nude Finish Tinted Moisturiser Moisturising foundations: If you have dry skin but are looking for fuller coverage then moisturising, oil-based foundations work better than tinted moisturisers. These are great for more mature skin as well. They soften the appearance of fine lines. Try: Mac Studio Sculpt SPF 15 Foundation Oil-free foundations: These are water based and specifically formulated for women who have oily skin. One of the downfalls of this type of foundation is that it tends to dry quicker than those containing oil. You will need a damp beauty sponge on hand for blending. Try: Catrice All Matt Plus Shine Control Make Up Mousse foundations: Mousse foundations are a fairly new addition to the foundation family. Light and smooth, they provide a barely there feel with medium coverage. Ideal for young skin looking for a matt finish without having that “cakey” feeling. Try: Essence Soft Touch Mousse MakeUp Stick foundations: The best thing about stick foundations is that you can pop them in your handbag for when you need a touch-up during the day or night. Unlike liquid foundations, you don’t have to worry about spillage either. Stick foundations tend to have a heavy coverage and can easily double up as concealer. Avoided these if you have dry or mature skin since it usually has a matte finish. Try: Revlon Photoready Insta Fix Makeup Powder foundations: These are great for woman on the go since they comes in compact form. Their formula is popular for women with oily skin as they target the T-zone that’s prone to midday shine. Try: LOV DUAlist 2in1 Powder Foundation Illuminating foundations: The dewy, glowing look is a nunavoidable trend. Illuminating foundations contain just a hint of shimmer. Since they offer light coverage, they can be used as a base before applying your usual foundation to give you a subtle glow. Not ideal for oily skin. Try: BYS Liquid Illuminator
