Uitzig school court case

-

THE Concerned Education Forum (CEF) is not a party to a case before the High Court concerning the school, as reported.

In addition, the Western Cape Education Department has not taken the matter “back to the court”, as mentioned in the Cape Argus report. The applicants are the governing body and the school.

The applicants in the case before the High Court are contesting the closure.

The WCED has provided the High Court with a detailed description of the condition of Uitzig Secondary, and what the department has done to repair and secure the school in recent years.

Vandalism has rendered the school unfit for occupation. Criminals have threatened and attacked security guards who have stopped guarding the school.

The Western Cape Education Minister has informed the court that her objective is to ensure that the basic education of the learners, and all learners in the Western Cape, is respected, protected, promoted.

The MEC and the WCED believe that the right of the learners to a basic education would be better served if they attend alternative schools with better facilities nearby. Many are doing so.

We look forward to the finding of the court on this matter.
