Keeping school open is the only solution

-

DEAR Mr Attwell

You qualify for almost instant promotion from your post as Communication Director in the WCED (Western Cape Education Department) for your very prompt response to a letter I wrote to the Cape Argus, and which was published on Tuesday, March 13, regarding the intended closure of Uitsig High School.

I would like to see the detailed report of the conditions at Uitsig High School and what the WCED claimed had been done “to repair and secure the school in recent years”. There is very little evidence of this claim! Vandalism and untold criminality are common at township schools when compared to what happens to schools in the “leafy suburbs”.

I also wish to question the legitimacy and sincerity of what Debbie Schafer provided to the court regarding her objective to ensure that the basic education of pupils, and all pupils in the Western Cape, is respected, protected and promoted. I have also not seen much, if any evidence, of her claims, and would like to be provided with more details. It is shocking that the MEC, as well as the WCED, has the unrealistic and false belief that the right of pupils to basic education would be better served if they attend alternative schools with better facilities. This belief necessitates that the poor and disadvantaged parents have to be subjected to the additional financial burden of transport costs out of the Uitsig area to maybe Cravenby, Ravensmead, etc.

Keeping the school open and revamping the infrastructure is the only solution.
