Cop stabbed in police station fracas

- Marvin Charles

THE CITY of Cape Town is lending its full co-operation to the SAPS after a shooting at the Mfuleni Police Station.

It’s believed a metro police officer shot dead an assailant who attacked him in the police station.

Yesterday morning, a metro officer was registering a case docket at the police station when a man arrived, the City of Cape Town said in a statement.

The man appeared agitated – he turned to speak to the metro officer, before reportedly stabbing him twice in the chest and once in his left arm with a knife.

“The officer retaliated by discharging three rounds from his service pistol, fatally wounding the suspect.

“Two other civilians sustained wounds – both to the right foot – as a result of ricocheting bullets,” said safety and security and social services mayoral committee member JP Smith.

“The SAPS is investigating, as is the Independent Police Investigative Directorate. The City will assist in any way possible to ensure that the investigation into this matter is expedited,” he said.

Meanwhile, police are seeking assistance to locate a suspect wanted in connection with a rape case in Mfuleni.

One night in March, a woman was on her way home when she got into a white Toyota Avanza taxi, police said. The driver allegedly became aggressive, forcing her to undress before raping her. The suspect is unknown to the victim. In Bishop Lavis, two men were arrested by police deployed in the area to combat gang violence. Police pulled over a suspicious car in Angela Road and arrested the two.

One of the suspects, a 37-year-old man, is known to SAPS members. He has been identified as the leader of a local gang and his bail conditions prohibit him being in Bishop Lavis.

He was arrested for the contravention of his bail conditions.

His passenger, a 29-year-old man, was found in possession of a unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He was arrested.

Both men were detained and are expected in court today.
