Delft taxi associations feud continues

- Marvin Charles

FRICTION between competing taxi associations operating from the Delft taxi rank is threatening to spiral out of control.

Delft Taxi Association chairman Nazeem Daniels said the Cata-affiliated taxi drivers have been invading their route and threatening their drivers.

Daniels said the ongoing violence is connected to the Cape Town to Delft route.

He said that Delft taxi operators have permits to operate on that route, but the Nyanga operators said they do as well.

Delft taxi rank is run by three associations that have divided the routes among them.

“We have had various incidences where our operators have lost their lives and we are demanding justice because this is unacceptable,” Daniels said.

He said numerous engagements and discussions have been had with Cata Seawater.

It’s not the first time violence has gripped the Delft Taxi Association.

Last month, three men were gunned down at the Delft taxi rank and three others were wounded.

Delft has nine taxi associations registered with Santaco.

The murders followed a feud over the lucrative Athlone taxi route.

It was alleged that the Langa-Athlone group did not want to share routes with the Langa township group.

Cata’s spokesperson Victor Wiwi disputed all allegations.

“Our operators are legally obliged to operate on that route and have the proper paperwork and permits required.”
