Open invitation
WITH the start of the month of annual fasting in Islam, the Open Mosque conveys blessed greetings to all Muslims during this yearly period of deep spiritual reflection and renewed social activism within our faith.
The sacred month of Ramadaan exemplifies a voluntary self-denial and rigorous religious discipline, and is a stipulated time for greater personal reflection and intensified individual growth by renewing the joint commitment of believers to revere the Creator and serve the creation.
To mark the beginning of Ramadaan, the Open Mosque is hosting a special public iftar (breaking of the fast) when people of other faiths (and none) will join fasting Muslims this Saturday. That day’s fast will be broken by a collective meal with family, friends, neighbours and colleagues in which Muslims (and others) render heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Almighty God.
Aside from the performance of sunset and night prayers as well as Qur’anic recitations, the iftar programme includes a hearty nutritious buffet, the recital of Ramadaan poetry and an informative scholarly presentation.
Dr Taj Hargey, the president of the Open Mosque, will speak on the “Spiritual Significance of Fasting in Islam”, which will be followed by a topical Q&A session.
Any non-Muslim guests who wish to fast on this particular day, either in solidarity with Muslims or so that they too can experience Ramadaan first hand, are welcomed to do so. However, this is not a prerequisite of attendance.
Those who would like to join us on Saturday, kindly e-mail info@)theopenmosque.org.za) or phone 021 824 1400.
The Open Mosque looks forward to welcoming participants to this combined spiritual/social function that builds new friendships by breaking bread together.
