A Marimba Xplosion heads to Langa

-

IN A BID to celebrate the history of Langa, the Mbewu Marimba Community project will be hosting its inaugural Marimba Xplosion event next weekend.

“Marimba music was introduced in the late 1970s by Catholic churches in Langa,” Banzi Tema, director of the initiative, said.

“When I look at the current marimba players’ state, it’s like history repeating itself, where a young musician will go to a gig just to get money to pay for their drugs and alcohol.

“There is no sense of responsibility and ownership of our music. This… is why I’m embarking on this journey of instilling determination, dedication and discipline,” he said.

Iconic jazz vocalist Sylvia Mdunyelwa and renowned actor Kwezi Kobus are also directors of the initiative.

“The company was set up to conceptualise and produce initiatives for young artists and self-sufficiency for the company. It has identified a platform not only to create entertainment, education and employment for the artists, but as a vehicle which will showcase young talent and go a long way in promoting the company’s goal towards self-sufficiency,” Tema said.

“This is where musicians can have a sense of belonging and find solace. We will be hosting our debut annual Marimba Xplosion on May 25 (Friday) and May 26 (Saturday) at Guga S’thebe Arts and Culture Centre in Langa,” Tema added.

The event will comprise 40 school marimba bands paying tribute to players who have passed on. The second half will showcase the evolution of marimba. – Staff Reporter
